There’s no other activity that has brought me closer to Korean men than sharing a cigarette. It’s mundane yet sacred – men huddled together for a brief moment in time, sharing a simple conversation or silence. A gathering of those of us who may be unable to communicate or be vulnerable in any other way. It’s community and connection. A simple ritual that hasn’t changed much through generations of men in my family - a passing of the cigarette. That said, do not smoke.
